Web application development

Web applications shaped around how your business works.

When off-the-shelf tools no longer fit, we build the portal, dashboard or internal system you need, and connect it to what you already run.

Where this fits

Spreadsheets are running the business

Important work depends on shared files that break, go stale or have no record of who changed what.

Customers need their own access

They should be able to place orders, see status or download documents without emailing you.

Your systems do not talk

Staff retype the same information across tools every day.

What we build

Customer portals
Secure accounts where customers can see and manage their own information.
Internal tools
Admin systems, approvals and workflows built around your real process.
Dashboards and reporting
Figures people can trust, drawn directly from your systems.
APIs and integrations
Documented APIs and connections to payment, accounting and other business tools.
Interface design
Screens and flows you can review as prototypes before they are built.
Accessibility and speed
Interfaces that work on phones, with keyboards and on ordinary connections.

When custom software is worth it

Custom web application development makes sense when the way you work is part of your advantage, when off-the-shelf tools force costly workarounds, or when licence costs grow past what ownership would cost.

It is usually the wrong choice for standard functions such as accounting or email. Buy those, and connect them to whatever you build.

What custom application development includes

Code is only part of a working application. A complete scope also covers these.

Discovery
Watching how the work happens today, including the exceptions people handle by hand.
Interface design
Prototypes that the people who will use the system can react to.
Data and permissions
A clear model of your information, and who may see or change it.
Integrations
Connections to the systems that already hold your data.
Testing and rollout
Automated tests, a staged launch and moving data across from the old process.
Documentation
Enough for your team, or another vendor, to run and change it.

Four decisions to settle early

  1. 01

    Build or buy

If an existing product covers most of the need, we will say so. Custom software should earn its cost.

  2. 02

    Who uses it first

Starting with one group and one workflow gets a useful result sooner.

  3. 03

Which system is the source of truth

Each piece of data needs one home, or the integrations will disagree.

  4. 04

    Who runs it afterwards

Your team, a future vendor or us. The answer affects the documentation and hosting.

Common questions

Do you design as well as build?

Yes. Interface design is part of the scope when you need it, and we can also work from your designs.

Can you work with our existing systems?

Usually, if they offer an API or a safe way to reach the data. We check this during scoping.

What does it cost?

It depends on scope. You get a written estimate at the end of scoping.

Is custom software more expensive than buying?

Often at the start, and you also take on maintenance. Compare the total cost over several years, including licences, workarounds and staff time.

What about ongoing maintenance?

All software needs security updates and small fixes. We plan for this in the scope, whether your team, another vendor or we handle it.
